The Oregon Coast has long been a destination for scenic beauty, maritime history, and windswept charm, and now, thanks to the vision of Hallmark Inns & Resorts, the craftsmanship of O’Brien, and the elegant design of Open Concept Architecture, it has something entirely new to offer. The Allred Hotel is a one-of-a-kind boutique oceanfront escape in Newport.
This recently completed hotel project is far more than a renovation, it’s a complete transformation of the beloved old motel, The Whaler, into a modern, elevated hospitality experience that serves both travelers and the local community. This multi-phase project brought architectural innovation and refined aesthetics to the forefront, creating a thoughtfully designed hotel that is as much a community centerpiece as it is a vacation destination.
A Community Reimagined
The Allred Hotel arrives at a critical time for the Central Oregon Coast, providing not only a much-needed boost to local tourism but also a meaningful investment in the Newport economy. The project introduces new employment opportunities, public gathering spaces, and stronger ties to local vendors, artists, and farmers, making it a true community-forward development.
Public amenities such as the Allred Bites + Bar, a stylish café and cocktail bar that welcomes both guests and locals, reflect the hotel’s mission to serve as a neighborhood hub. With its espresso bar by day, curated cocktails by night, and soon to come live music on weekends, it’s a surefire staple of Newport nightlife.
A Complete Transformation
The Allred’s comprehensive updates included a complete renovation of the existing hotel structure, along with the construction of new boutique-style suites and a new parking garage. A new lobby, restaurant, and bar were all added, while the old hot tub, sauna, and weight rooms were modernized to enhance guest amenities. The parking lot was also rebuilt, featuring new sidewalks and an upgraded stormwater drainage system.
The design of this project embraces a strong visual identity rooted in both place and purpose. The exterior combines rustic cedar siding with concrete foundation walls formed into a wood plank texture for a stylistic coastal appearance. Inside, beautiful custom woodwork adds warmth and character, highlighted by a centerpiece staircase adorned with wave-shaped paneling and newel posts that mirror the architectural language of the nearby Yaquina Bay Bridge—a meaningful nod to Newport’s geography and legacy.
The sunlit rooms capture the serenity of the coast, with large windows and private balconies that frame panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Interior touches such as locally made art, premium walk-in showers, and luxury linens create a tranquil, upscale experience that invites rest and reflection.
Welcome to All
With its pet-friendly policies, locally inspired cuisine, and publicly accessible gathering spaces, The Allred is built for inclusion. Whether you’re a visitor from out of state or a Newport local grabbing drinks with friends, the hotel was designed with you in mind.
Sustainability was also a core priority. O’Brien’s construction of this project incorporated energy-efficient systems, water-saving fixtures, and eco-conscious materials throughout. Local sourcing — from food to furniture to art — ensures the hotel directly supports the regional economy.
The Allred is a heartfelt tribute to what came before, but with a new level of luxury and refinement. O’Brien’s attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship are evident in every square foot, from the rustic textures of the exterior to the soft glow of the interiors. This is a project that doesn’t just change the landscape, it reshapes how people experience the Oregon Coast.
