The Commons Brewery, a celebrated part of Portland’s thriving craft beer scene, was designed to blend industrial charm with a warm, communal atmosphere. Located on Belmont Street, the project transformed an existing warehouse into a fully functioning seven-barrel brewery and taproom, seamlessly integrating modern brewing infrastructure while preserving the building’s original character.

The construction involved structural reinforcements to support the brewing operations and the addition of key functional and aesthetic elements. At the heart of the space stands a wooden hub structure that serves as both the bar and main seating area. Above, an open mezzanine provided additional seating, accessible via a sleek, central staircase, allowing guests to overlook the brewing area while enjoying their drinks.

To enhance the flow of light and improve accessibility, new openings and entryways were cut into the street-facing façade, creating a welcoming connection between the brewery and its surroundings. The design followed an open-concept approach, building a distinct yet harmonious “structure within a structure” that retained the industrial authenticity of the original space while offering a thoughtfully curated drinking environment.

More than just a brewery, The Commons has become a gathering place for beer enthusiasts, known for its small-batch ales and its dedication to craft and community. The design played a key role in cultivating this welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that the space feels both functional and inviting—a true reflection of Portland’s collaborative and innovative craft beer culture.
