Haystack Lane Residence

With it’s back against the lush forest and a direct view of the Pacific, O’Brien both built, and later carefully expanded and remodeled this Oregon Coast residence to nestle naturally into its idyllic surroundings. The numerous front-facing windows open to a panoramic ocean view, while its rear elevation embraces the forest setting, creating a perfect balance between sea and land. The master bathroom was designed with the vision of a “shower in the woods,” and the shower’s floor-to ceiling windows fully open to the tranquil forest directly outside. The windows also feature an automatic frosted glass feature for privacy, activated at the touch of a button.

Reclaimed wood was chosen as the primary building material, both inside and out, adding warmth and character, and allowing the home to fit seamlessly into the landscape. The integration of snow-fencing throughout the residence further unifies these spaces, its distinctive pattern lending a sense of continuity and artistry to the overall design. The later remodel also involved exterior water repairs to protect the structure from the harsh coastal climate.

New features include a rooftop deck for more time spent with the ocean in view, and a custom barbecue pit for gatherings of family and friends. Above the front door, hanging planter boxes brim with coastal flora, lending a setting-appropriate welcome for visitors. The result is a thoughtfully revived retreat, where panoramic views and natural elements come together to celebrate the beauty of the Oregon Coast.
