LucidWild Estate’s breathtaking new tasting room is as much a work of art as a building. Its dynamic range of spaces elevates it to far more than just a winery. It is the zenith of what wine tasting can be: a perfect harmony of exceptional craft, awe-inspiring panoramas, and meticulously curated experience.
Owners L.J. and Blair Nicholas’ vision was twofold. They wanted their tasting room to make a statement, while also embracing the roots of where their wine comes from. The physical architecture of their new tasting room embodies that ethos. Wines are far from a monolith. They have different personalities, and this tasting room parallels that diversity with its constellation of distinct room experiences—outward and inward facing; communal and intimate. Food pairings with select wine tasting experiences lend additional sensory connection to the visit. What guests see and feel is also what they taste.
With O’Brien’s construction expertise and Anacapa’s elegant design, the LucidWild Estate SkyTerraces + WineCaves puts sustainability and human connection on center stage. The building is a medley of unique spaces to fit each guest, and hospitality that’s as thoughtful as the vineyard below. Their farm-to-table model emphasizes their holistic approach to wine tasting, and an intrinsic connection to the land and the uniquely Oregonian gifts it provides.
Love the Wine, Love the Earth
It goes without saying that LucidWild’s wine is exquisite. But not only does it soothe the tastebuds, it soothes the soul. While drinking any of LucidWild’s many incredible vintages, you can rest assured that as much thought was put into its production as its flavor and finish. The estate leans heavily into regenerative and sustainable practices such as dry-farming, the non-irrigated cultivation of grapes which reduces water consumption by utilizing natural soil moisture retention. As a LIVE Certified vineyard, LucidWild has proven themselves to be environmentally conscious and socially responsible stewards of the land.
That stewardship goes beyond sustainable farming, it is also found in the very bones of the tasting room itself. Thoughtful design choices endeavor to bring the essence of the outdoors into the space, with the basalt rock columns that mirror the stone local to the Pacific Northwest, and art features such as hanging leaves in the atrium.
Curating Experience
But what draws so many people to Oregon’s wine country is not just the quality of our grapes, or the idyllic beauty of the land, it is also the ambiance of place, and the spectrum of experiences that go along with the tasting of wine. LucidWild Estate is a revolution in all these aspects of what makes wine tasting such a sought after and unforgettable experience. That experience begins the moment you enter the building. The single-story front exterior is made intentionally unassuming, to contrast the moment guests enter the building and are presented with a grand, two-story atrium and staircase.
The entry to the tasting room frames what might at first appear as the work of a master painter: a breathtaking view of the vineyard below. In fact, that is literally the case; it’s the view that made the Oregon Wine Country license plate, and the artist was painting it from the vantage point of where this tasting room now sits. At 800 feet of elevation, countless other natural landmarks smile back at you, from the rolling Dundee hills, to Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson standing sentry on the horizon. And from inside of the atrium looking out, one’s perspective is guided by expansive terraces and the long fire elements outside, augmenting that picturesque view out into the hillside.
For Any Occasion
As a collection of distinct spaces, the LucidWild Estate SkyTerraces + WineCaves is a place for any occasion and any personal predilection.
The SkyTerraces, the top floor which includes the LivingRoom + SkyLounge spaces, offers a seated flight of five estate wines, paired with small bites from Estate Chef Mason Goucher (whose résumé includes ōkta, a beloved wine country restaurant). Expansive glass sliding doors wrap around on three sides for a nearly total panoramic view. With both indoor and outdoor seating, this is a place to gather around a wide fireplace in cooler weather, or sip by the bar while taking in the views.
For a playful shift in mood, there’s the RecRoom; play billiards and shuffleboard, or catch a game on the a 96‑inch screen inside, with ping‑pong and a crushed‑oyster‑shell bocce court (a traditional bocce finish) outside.
For a more clandestine and private experience, Jellies is a speakeasy to transport you back into the dreams of a time past, with a jellyfish tank and vintage vinyl. Entering the room evokes the sensation of being spirited away from your surroundings, into an otherworldly space. The exceptional lighting in the space plays a big part in that experience. Neal Lighting was very involved in the design and aesthetics of Jellies, from the visual concept to the interior detailing and decorative light fixtures; the entire space was cohesively envisioned by Ron Neal in tandem with owners L.J. and Blair.
And for those with business to attend to, the IdeaLab is where you can impress any client—a space for meetings and corporate events unlike any other. Situated on the lower floor, this boardroom provides a quiet and elevated place where ideas can run as rampant as the vines beyond.
The final stop on your tour takes you into the belly of the very land that made all of this possible; the CaveLounge is a barrel cellar and lounge built for a quiet, serene tasting, where every detail down to the pendant lighting and the artisanal finishes on the hand-scraped walls and ceiling coalesce to provide a truly intimate experience. The lounge includes a main gathering hall for dinners or events, along with more secluded nooks for quieter tastings.
In the end, LucidWild feels less like a destination and more like a state of mind—where architecture, landscape, and craft meet in quiet conversation. The tasting room doesn’t ask guests to choose between nature and design, or between indulgence and intention; it invites them to linger in the space where all of those things coexist. Here, among basalt and vine, the beauty of Oregon’s wine country is not simply observed—it’s lived, one glass, one moment, one breath at a time.
